good evening, and it's great to have you with us as we near the end of another week together. friday nights are never slow. tonight, the long lines already. voting has begun in the presidential election. also tonight, a sudden reversal from the cdc. if you have been exposed to covid. but we're going to begin with the unwelcome development in the atlantic. three tropical storms named in just one day. one now headed for the gulf already and we're tracking he hurricane near bermuda as well. all this comes as hurricane sally slammed into the u.s., turning deadly. already that new th take a look at the map at this hour. the parade of three storms, one on track for bermuda. because we've gone through the names the national weather service turning to the greek alphabet. beta is headed towards the texas coast. let's get to ginger zee just back north after hurricane sally and already timing out the next wave of storms for us.

hey, ginger. >> reporter: david, it is hard to believe i may be going back to the gulf coast as soon as monday. because of beta, which is right nowoving north northeast at 9 miles per hour. you can see it on the satellite imagery. it is of course going to be meandering. it's got a stationery frontal it's going squeeze it, stall it, and it's going to drop a significant amount of rain. there's a large cone of uncertainty, so if anywhere from coastal louisiana, down through houston, galveston, corpus christi, even brownsville, i want to you pay close attention. you have a couple of days to prepare. we have days to fine tune, but i can promise you you're going to get a lot of rain influenced by the tropics. then teddy, that one going to go just to the east of bermuda. remember, they just got hit with paulette. but it will also kick up high

might as well do it today. >> reporter: minneapolis officials say they are they're shattering records, mailing over 114,000 ballots. >> mail obviously is what we are encouraging. vote at home. be safe. >> reporter: biden and trump both in minnesota today, both trying to make their mark with working class voters. the former vice president has been trying to show he feels their pain. >> right now i do work in a cancer center in the area. i make under $15 an hour. >> ugh. >> reporter: today biden said trump just doesn't get it. >> i don't look down my nose when people are busting their necks, just making a living. trump says, by the way, i'm paraphrasing, everyone's in the stock market. that's why he cares about the stock market. what the hell's he talking about? >> mary, experts predicting that up to two-thirds of american voter could vote early earth by

person or in mail. president trump and biden both know that, both in minnesota tonight. >> reporter: with the pandemic and with so much uncertainty, both candidates are urging people to vote as soon as possible. in this year, where it seems anything is likely, they're eager to get these votes in the bank, especially in these key battleground states like minnesota. >> we should mention the team working hard on this. multiple states listed on abc news about in-person voting if it exists in your state. president trump bringing up his own time line for the coronavirus saying it's coming and soon. much of this election will be a referendum on his handling of the pandemic. today more than 198,000 lives have been lost, nearing the 200,000 mark. president trump saying today of an essential vaccine, quote, we essentially have it ready. but the president acknowledges today millions of americans won't get it, according to the

president, until next april. here's jonathan karl tonight. >> reporter: with americans already lining up to vote and polls showing most disapprove of how he's handled coronir vaccine b >> we essentially have it. we will be announcing it fairly soon. >> reporter: most experts say a vaccine won't be widely available until next year, but president trump is giving the impression it's right around the corner. >> the administration will deliver it to the american people immediately. distribution will begin within 24 hours. the president acknowledged most americans won't be able to get the vaccine until april. earlier this week, he lashed out when cdc director dr. robert redfield told congress it probably won't widely available until months later. >> reporter: how is it that you don't trust your own experts? do you think you know better than they do? >> not all of them, no. no, i think i have -- yeah, in many cases, i do. >> reporter: there are clear indications the white house has pressured the cdc to keep its statements about the virus in line with what the president

says. less than a month ago, the cdc put out guidance saying that even if you have been exposed to somebody with the virus, quote, you do not necessarily need a test if you don't have symptoms. medical experts were puzzled. "the new york times" reported the guidance was issued over the objection of the cdc's own scientists. and today, the cdc abruptly reversed itself, saying flatly, you need a test if you have been exposed to someone with covid-19. it's what cdc experts have been saying for months. >> so hard for people at home the track this along the way, but we're trying to help them out. jon karl with us live from the white house. another major headline -- 46 days until the election. the president today announcing $13 billion in aid to puerto rico. of course he's faced a lot of criticism for tis response to the devastation from maria. you reported in the past, he kbl complained in the past puerto

flare-ups. kaylee hartung from the region again tonight. >> reporter: tonight, the california wildfire sparked by a gender-reveal celebration, taking the life of a first responder. the u.s. forest service confirming a firefighter was killed overnight while battling the el dorado fire near san bernardino. new video shows the fire flaring up, crews fighting flames on both sides of highway 38 in rugged mountains. this afternoon, a solemn procession carrying the firefighter's body through the charred landscape. officers later saluting the flag-draped gurney. wildfires now claiming the lives of at least 36 people out west this year. the wind-fueled bobcat fire just north of los angeles another big concern tonight, forcing new evacuations in juniper hills. an orange haze there blotting out the sun. >> the winds just driving flames towards homes here. >> the fire is right behind the house, up on the little hill up there, and i just said, screw this. >> reporter: that fire inching dangerously close to the famed mt. wilson observatory. the smoke even closing yosemite national park, marring its

natural beauty. and in oregon, storms bringing relief from the toxic smoke, but the downpours threatening fire-ravaged communities with landslides and flash flooding. david, the fire here is 66% contained, but you can see it's still active. we just watched this spot fire pop up. and this weekend, conditions can take a dangerous turn. we're expecting it to be dry and hot throughout the state of california. risk to life and property is far from over. this now makes three fire personnel deaths in california wildfires in the past year. david? >> thinking about that firefighter's family tonight. kaylee, thank you. we're also following a developing headline involving u.s. troops in syria. news from the pentagon, word that the u.s. is hardening forces in sear i can't recollyn. troops and bradley vehicles in the wake of confrontations the russian forces. >> reporter: the pentagon is sending a 100 additional forces, six bradley fighting vehicles

arrived in syria today. they'll also increase the frequency of u.s. fighter jet patrols over midwestern forces. this move comes after increased tensions after russian forces rammed a u.s. armored vehicle last month. seven soldiers injured in that collision. the move is intended as a show of force to russia that the 500 u.s. troops in russia will not be intimidated. those troops deployed to protect kurdish oil fields. >> rachel scott. thank you. we turn at home to new fallout involving jerry falwell jr. his wife's cal to 911, telling the dispatcher her husband fell down the stairs and was bleeding from his head. here's adrienne bankert. >> reporter: tonight, the newly released 911 call from the wife of embattled former liberty university president jerry falwell jr., seeking help for injuries he suffered from what appears to be a drunken fall. >> where is he bleeding from?

>> his head, his ear, his nose. >> reporter: according to dispatch records, becki falwell arrived home around 11:00 p.m. august 30th after getting a call from her husband that he'd fallen. the doors locked. she had to break into the house. she's heard telling 911 he's been drinking. when asked whether he was drinking heavily, she responds -- >> i'm not going to answer that question. >> reporter: records show he told ems he'd fallen down the stairs and hit his head. first responders documented that he had multiple cuts to his face and slurred speech. >> go forth from liberty and trust in confidence that god has a plan. >> reporter: falwell led one of the nation's largest christian colleges. its ethics code includes a ban on alcohol. a week prior to the 911 call he resigned from the university amid the bombshell revelation of his wife's longtime affair with one-time miami pool boy turned friend and business associate giancarlo granda. granda accuses jerry of being involved in the seven-year affair. falwell denies those claims and says that granda is trying to shame and blackmail them.
